Scott Adkins: We kicked each other a lot during filming.
He is a fan of Stilian Petrov and tells us about the shooting of Wolverine with Hugh Jackman.
Scott, you are one of the few action stars from Britain…
-Yes, I’m from Birmingham, England
And one of the few gymnasts in Hollywood?
-I’ve done gymnastics and many kinds of sport, but when I was young I played football.
Football in Birmingham means Aston Villa. Are you a fan of the Bulgarian national player Stilian Petrov, who became a player of the season by votes of the club’s fans?
-Yes, I’m a fan of Stan. I was living alone during the last year and I was able to watch Villa’s games. Stilian is truly a great player. Without being an expert I think that he and Barry are the best players not only in our team but among the leaders in Premiership.
How did you come up from gymnastics and football to the action movies?
- When I was 10 along with football I decided to devote myself to martial arts. And I’ve trained some of them: Taekwondo, Boxing, Wrestling. I’ve done also acrobatics, and gymnastics as you previously mentioned. I’m a sports type! I grew up with the films of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan and I wanted to be like them. My current profession gave me the opportunity to even work with Jackie Chan.
Are the martial arts and especially MMA the sport that is going to move aside the soccer in the new century?
-No, they can’t become that popular since MMA is not exactly a sport. Because there’s a lot of brutality it can’t be liked by so many people as the soccer. But MMA is certainly gaining popularity all over the world. Even the people got familiar with wrestling and Jui-Jitsu. When someone says that MMA is too dangerous I say : point me even one death case. And I start to tell many such cases in boxing.
At least everything is fake during filming, isn’t it?
-Once I was kicked in the face so hard that it didn’t seem to me it was fake. On the first day of filming Undisputed 3 I dislocated my ankle.
The producer should have been very disappointed?
-He was, but not that much as the same thing happed to me during the last film in Bulgaria – Ninja.
Do you often shoot movies in Bulgaria?
-Undisputed 3 is my sixth film here. Nu Image is number one in the world in producing action films and I’m among the leading action figures so the logic is obvious. The studio is great and I like Sofia a lot.
Do you go to Sin City (it’s a disco club) like most of your colleagues do during filming in Sofia?
-No, I have so many work that when I’m free I go to the gym and sleep. After all I come to Sofia for business not for pleasure.
As I mentioned your colleagues, when are the “old action dogs” like Dolph Lundgren and Jean-Claude Van Damme going to retire?
-They were my idols when I was a kid and they’re going to stay on the screen for a long time. The other is a matter of generations, which are changing because every new generation is better than the previous. In action movies like no other genre the things come up to the body and it’s abilities. Perhaps when you watch us every man that practices something or trains says: I can do that. Believe me - it's not that easy.
What are your impressions of Hugh Jackman? And what is the difference between the ordinary productions like Undisputed 3 and the super productions like Wolverine?
-Twentieth Century Fox takes good care of the participants in the super productions. Hugh Jackman is a very noble man. We did some wonderful action sequences and we did a very good job. There was no ego competition. It doesn’t matter that we’re both tough guys.
How is the crisis affection the movie industry in your opinion. Are the actors’ salaries going down?
-In the time of crisis people should go more often to the cinemas. Our industry is like insured against such crisis. For me there’s no change – they didn’t cut my salary.
What is your dream role?
-Bond, James Bond.
